More than one-third of American adults battle anxiety at some point in their lives, and roughly 15 percent have anxiety disorders. They are no joke, with symptoms including worry, irritability, restlessness, being easily startled, and feeling hyper-vigilant. Being diagnosed doesn’t mean that the feelings will go away forever, but it does mean that there are ways to manage them and keep anxiety from interfering with your daily life.

Positive Attitude.

A positive attitude, or outlook, will help you on good days and bad ones. It’s truly a mindset. Anxiety is an emotion. When we experience it, we feel nervous or stressed, and it can be difficult to get a handle on how we are feeling. But these feelings are normal, and it’s a reaction to something. It’s our job to figure out how to deal with our emotions, and the best way of doing that is by learning positive ways to cope with anxiety.

Limit Alcohol and Caffeine.

When you’re stressed, anxious, or depressed, sometimes you need something a little more potent than a cup of chamomile tea or a glass of wine to calm you down. But be careful: too much alcohol or caffeine can make you feel worse in the long run.

Enough Sleep.

As anxious as you may be, it’s equally important to get sleep. We often confuse being stressed with being sleep-deprived. But, not getting enough sleep can see anxiety to increase, which can make you more stressed and anxious. While you might not be able to fall asleep easily, taking an extended power nap during the day can help. Taking a daily nap for 20 minutes can help increase alertness, concentration, and attention. Once you’re feeling more awake, you can tackle the tasks at hand.

Exercise Daily.

Anxiety isn’t easy. It’s estimated that 40 million adults in the United States struggle with it, more than the number of Americans who have diabetes. It’s normal to feel anxiety from time to time, but it can interfere with their daily lives for some people.

Time-Out.

Anxiety plagues millions of Americans, and it’s nothing to joke about. It can rear its ugly head daily, causing you to feel stressed, worried, and overwhelmed. Count 1 To 10 Slowly. 

Your anxiety feels out of control. It feels intense and threatens to consume you. It feels like you’re going crazy. But, when it takes over, there’s hope. If you turn around, count to 10 slowly.

Give Your Best.

Anxiety can be stressful. Our minds are on high alert, thinking about everything that could happen. It can be normal, but sometimes it gets out of control. To calm your mind during anxiety. Give your best at work; work 80% instead of 50%. Give 100% effort when you play sports, when studying, and when you sleep. Give your 100% effort also when dating, when with friends or family. Giving your best will keep you living your best life.

Welcome Humor. 

Sometimes the hardest thing to do with anxiety is to accept it. The anxiety is there—it’s just you that can’t accept it. When it prevents us from living our lives to the fullest, we need to find something else—anything else—to do. This can include anything from reading a funny book, sitting down to write in a journal, and watching a funny movie.

Take Deep Breaths.

Taking a deep breath can help you calm yourself. To do this, exhale all the air from your lungs. Try holding your breath only for a couple of seconds. Slowly release the air. You can repeat this about 10 times. This technique can be repeated throughout the day, and it will help reduce your anxiety.

Anxiety is a scary feeling. It can make you feel like you are on the edge of jumping out of your skin; it can also make you want to sink into the floor or curl up in the corner. The good news? Anxiety can be, and is, managed. Most people feel anxious occasionally, but it can become a concern if it gets worse or lasts for a long time.
